ABOUT

Get to Know our Farm

As I noted on the main page, we are a small family farm. We are not certified organic but we practice organic farming techniques. We strive to be as natural as possible and use everything mother nature provides us. What do I mean by this? In the fall the leaves fall to the ground and need to be cleaned up. I rake them and chop them up for the compost pile. When I mow the grass the clippings also go in the compost. All the vegetable scraps go into the compost. The following year I am rewarded with all natural rich compost loaded with worms. Nothing goes to waste.

What do we grow?

We grow most of the common vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, peppers, peas, okra, etc. Almost all are heirlooms. In recent years my passion has been growing rare and odd varieties, especially colorful varieties. We grow purple beans, blue tomatoes, multicolored striped peppers, red okra. The reason for growing these out of the ordinary crops is because just that, they are out of the ordinary (and usually better for you). Supermarket vegetables are not grown for health and nutrition, they are grown for transport and shelf life. Tomatoes have become bland and tasteless. Other vegetables are similar. The supermarket variety is one that will last longer in storage and ship across the country well, not for taste. Many of these unusual varieties I grow have far superior taste. My family refuses to each supermarket cucumbers any more after being spoiled by sweet, delicious home grown heirloom cucumbers.
